This is the vision that the Sovereign Lord revealed to Obadiah concerning the land of Edom. We have heard a message from the Lord that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say, "Get ready, everyone! Let's assemble our armies and attack Edom!"
The Lord says to Edom, "I will make you small among the nations; you will be utterly despised. You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. 'Who can bring me down to the ground?" you ask boastfully.
Though you soar like the eagle and make you nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down." declares the LORD.
"If thieves came at night and robbed you, they would not take everything. Those who harvest grapes always leave a few for the poor. But your enemies will wipe you out completely.
Every nook (편안하고 아늑한 곳) and cranny (틈, 틈새) of Edom will be searched and looted(훔치다, 약탈하다 - 방화, 전쟁, 범죄 중에). Every treasure will be found and taken.
All your allies (동맹국, 협력자) will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your land. They will promise you peace while plotting to deceive and destroy you. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won't even know about it. At that time not a single wise person will be left in the whole land of Edom."
에돔은 야곱(이스라엘)의 쌍둥이 형 에서가 세운 민족 국가이다. 그들은 이스라엘 옆에 위치한 나라로서, 사막 한 가운데에 세워진 고대 요새 국가였다. 그들은 중동의 나라들 중에서 중개 무역으로 막대한 부를 쌓았고, 그 요새는 정말 튼튼하고, 완전해서 어느 나라도 에돔을 침략할 엄두를 내지 못했다. 그러나, 하나님께서는 '오만한 자' '교만한 자'를 싫어하신다. 그게 누구에게 대해서든. 무엇에 대해서든 '자만한 자'를 싫어하신다.
오바댜 서에 따르면, 에서는 '어느 누구도 내가 가진 이 높은 지위와 영향력을 어쩔 수 없어. 나는 아주 능력도 많고, 돈도 많거든.' 에서는 그렇게 뽐내며 보무도 당당하게 걸었다. 그런데 하나님은 말씀하셨다. 너가 믿었던 친구들이 뒤에서 짜고, 너를 심하게 폭행하고 너의 재산을 빼앗아 나눠 갖을 계획들을 하고 있다. 에서가 믿었던 친구들이 너에게 함정을 팔 것이다 덫을 놀 것이다. 올무를 설치하고 있다. 그런데, 너는 그것을 알지 조차 못하고 있다. 그리고 너는 비참한 상태가 될 것이다.
